GANO AND BEVERLY EVANS (with 'Sassy')
|
CO-HOSTS: "TWO 4 JAZZ" THE TUCSON JAZZ RADIO PROJECT |
Gano's experience as a musician, broadcaster and master of ceremonies and Bev's special expertise in the jazz vocalist genre, result in a combined 16 years in the arena of jazz broadcasting on public radio.
GANO'S MUSICAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN
Junior High and High School: Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, began study of music in the 8th grade on clarinet. In high school, learned saxophone in order to play in dance bands. In junior year, formed the 11 piece Gano Evans Orchestra, which played on a regular basis in the Denver area for the next two years.

College and Beyond: As a music major at Colorado State College, (now The University of Northern Colorado) spent weekends and summers playing saxophone and clarinet in dance bands on one-nighters in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. In the Navy, played in several station bands and combos. After the service, the situational demands of marriage and the time constraints associated with a position as a new management trainee in industry led to the conclusion that music would have to be an avocation. Eventually, after deciding on a career in academia, went on to earn MBA and PhD degrees resulting in 42 years as a university professor / administrator in the areas of management and marketing.
Return to the Jazz Scene: During his 19-year "day gig" as Professor of Management and Marketing at the University of Nevada-Reno, decided to become active in the area's jazz scene and became a member of "FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ", a large society of fans and professional jazz musicians in Reno. After being appointed to the Board of Directors and serving as First Vice President, was elected President and served three terms. While Gano was serving as an MC at a jazz festival, a musician friend introduced him to Bev and they discovered their mutual jazz interests. This led to marriage and a lifetime sharing of their jazz avocation.
A Chance to Be a Sideman Again (1988-2000) In 1988, after being appointed to an academic position as Chairperson of the Department of Business Administration at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, became acquainted with several musicians in the local jazz community. This resulted in joining the 18-piece FREDERICKSBURG BIG BAND, playing tenor saxophone and clarinet. In addition to playing in the reed section for 12 years, served as Co-Leader In Charge of Programming and Master of Ceremonies.

Beverly and Gano Become Co-Hosts (2004-2005) 'The Real Thing on Saturday Night Jazz' on WHQR 91.3 fm
The WHQR Program Manager wanted to add a 'feminine presence' in the "Saturday Night Jazz'' time slot in rotation with three other hosts. This new 2 hour show was designed to meld Bev's overall jazz knowledge, her considerable expertise in the jazz vocalist genre and previous media experience with Gano's forte in selection of the array of instrumental performances associated with the 'mainstream' jazz idiom. 'The Real Thing' was broadcast 17 times (once a month) between May 22nd, 2004 and August 20th, 2005.
Gano and Beverly Host A New Show (2005-2006) 'Two's Company....Jazz Sessions' on WHQR 91.3 fm
In October of 2005, WHQR management decided to discontinue the 'Saturday Night Jazz' format with rotating hosts. Instead of the previous 2 hour-once per month schedule, the station contracted with Beverly and Gano to design and produce a new 1 hour show to be broadcast every Saturday evening in the time slot following Gano's big band show. 'Two's Company...Jazz Sessions' replicated the design used for 'The Real Thing' and ran for sixty-one consecutive weeks between October 8th, 2005 and December 9th, 2006. Then, on January 1, 2007; a new management team at WHQR discontinued nationally syndicated jazz programs and local jazz shows.
Gano and Bev Return to Broadcasting. (2007)
'Jazz to a T' on Delta Airlines In-Flight Jazz Channel
While flying to 'The West Coast Jazz Party' in February, 2007; Gano and Bev discovered that Delta Airlines featured some 'hosted' jazz shows in their in-flight musical programming. Eventually, Soundtrack Marketing contracted for a new show - 'Jazz To a T' - which was featured on flights during September and October, 2007.
'Two4Jazz' on The Tucson Jazz Radio Project-24 hour jazz programming -www.tucsonjazzradio.org
Tony Frank, the director of The Tucson Jazz Radio Project sent an announcement to this website seeking hosts with jazz radio experience to augment his own programs. After auditioning previous 'Big Bands, Blues and Ballads Too' and 'Two's Company...Jazz Sessions' shows, Tony particularly liked the musical mix and the 'chemistry' of Gano and Bev's delivery. Using the 'broadcast tested' / successful format** of their previous co-hosted shows, it was decided that a new 2 hour show - 'Two4Jazz' would be offered on Wednesdays on the Tucson Jazz Radio channel. **Note: See WHAT MAKES 'TWO4JAZZ' UNIQUE? on home page
